Description
This coin was issued underEmperor
Huvishka
(
158-195
AD) in
Kushan Empire.
Kushan Empire
was a syncretic empire, formed by the
Yuezhi
, in the
Bactrian territories
.
It spread to encompass much of modern-day territory of
Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India
.
Kushans were most probably
one of the five branches
of the Yuezhi confederation, who migrated from
northwestern China (Xinjiang and Gansu) and settled in ancient
Bactria
.
Kushans followed
Greek religious ideas
and iconography after the Greco-Bactrian tradition, and elements of Zoroastrianism.
They in general were also great
patrons
of Buddhism
.
They played an important role in the
spread of Buddhism
to central Asia and China.
Huvishka
was a Kushan emperor from the death of
Kanishka
until the succession of
Vasudeva
I about
thirty years
later.
His rule was a period of retrenchment and consolidation for the Empire.
In particular he devoted time and effort early
in his reign to the exertion of greater control over the city of Mathura.
