    The Western Satraps
were Indo-Scythian (Saka) rulers of west-central India from from the 1st through the 4th centuries AD. They were contemporaries of the Great Kushans who were possibly their overlords. The first dynasty of the Western Satraps were the Kshaharatas and the greatest ruler of that dynasty was Nahapana, who initiated their silver coinage. Estimates for the reign of Nahapana vary. Some scholars have assigned his reign to AD 119-124; others place it in the mid-1st century. Nahapana is known to have been a benefactor of Buddhist shrines. Through the port city of Barugaza (modern Bharuch or Broach), the Western Satraps accumulated great wealth through trade with Rome and Persia. Wine, metals and glass were imported. Silk, cotton and grain were exported. A period of decline began at the end of the 2nd century and the Western Satraps were eventually conquered by the Gupta Empire at the beginning of the 5th century.
